Abstract Titanium alloys have limited development due to their low surface hardness and poor wear resistance. The surface modification treatment of electro-spark deposition (ESD) can improve the working performance of the titanium alloy. In this paper, a strengthening coating was prepared on the surface of titanium alloy with NiCr–3 as electrode. The effects of ESD process parameters on the surface roughness, surface morphology and thickness of the coating are analyzed. The change rule of microstructure of the coating under different process conditions is analyzed. The results show that with the increase of specific deposition time, the coating thickness first increases and then decreases, and the best specific deposition time is 4min/cm2. With the increase of deposition frequency, the number of surface cracks decreases. With the increase of deposition voltage, deposition frequency and specific deposition time, the hardness of coating increases and finally tends to be stable. The obtained coatings are reaction coatings formed by the reaction of Ti element and NiCr–3 electrode in the matrix. The main components of the coatings are phases of Ni3Ti、Ni2Ti、Cr2Ti and Cr1.93Ti1.07 .
