Abstract Construction of intelligent assembly capability for aircraft large components (CIAC–ALC) is a complex system engineering with remarkable characteristics of multi-disciplinary and multi-professional cross-integration. In recent years, CIAC–ALC has achieved a considerable degree of single-point technological breakthrough and applications, but it has not reached the global optimum. Therefore, a method-based on modelbased systems engineering (MBSE) is proposed to scientifically develop the CIAC–ALC. Through this method, the requirements and technical schemes of CIAC–ALC are defined and refined step by step. In the process, the corresponding digital model is constructed and the simulation technology is used in continuous verification and iterative optimization for realizing maximum effectiveness of CIAC–ALC.
