Abstract Ceramic matrix composite (CMC) has a series of superior properties such as high temperature resistance, low density, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, and is regarded as the first choice material for the new generation of high thrust-to-weight ratio aero-engine high temperature components. In the application environment, CMC has problems such as insufficient resistance to water vapor oxidation. It needs to be in service for a long time under the protection of environmental barrier coatings (EBCs). First, this article introduces the overall development status of ceramic matrix composites and environmental barrier coatings; Second, it discusses ceramic matrix composites and environmental barrier coatings in detail. The research progress and application of ceramic matrix, fiber, interfacial layer and ceramic matrix composites materials are reviewed as well as new research results of scholars at home and abroad in recent years. At the same time, the research progress and preparation methods of environmental barrier coatings are introduced, and the research progress of its failure mechanism is reviewed. The article summarizes the current problems of ceramic matrix composites and environmental barrier coatings as well as prospects for future research.
