Abstract The main characteristics of gamma–TiAl intermetallic compounds were introduced. Poor plasticity and tenacity, low thermal conductivity are the main factors that lead to high cutting temperature, high cutting force and poor surface quality. The typical machining and non-traditional machining methods of gamma–TiAl intermetallic compounds were summarized from the aspects of tool life, machining efficiency and surface quality. And we consider that grinding and electrochemical machining are suitable machining methods at present. However, there is still a lack of processing technology that can give consideration to efficiency, cost and surface quality.
