Abstract The method of optimizing the fi nite element model (FEM) for the stress concentration is studied. Through comparing the results of different element density and element quality of the sheet with hole under the load (simple tension, biaxial tension, tension and compression), the method of optimizing the fi nite element model is proposed. Moreover, tangential stress of rotor plate of the rotary machine with the method is proposed in the paper, which is verifi ed through comparing the results of the rotor plate with sub-modeling method.
