Abstract Particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (PRAMCs) have excellent mechanical properties and are widely used in aviation industry. However, due to the large difference in mechanical properties between the reinforcing particles and the aluminum matrix, as well as the dispersion distribution of the reinforcing particles in the aluminum matrix, PRAMCs are difficult to process materials. This paper mainly reviews the research status of the effect of PRAMCs on the cutting force, cutting temperature and machining quality of PRAMCs in the process of turning, milling and assisted machining, and the future research on PRAMCs was prospected. The study provides a theoretical basis for PRAMCs machining, which is of guiding significance for improving the level of industrial production and processing.
