Abstract Compliant grinding has been a focus in the field of grinding in recent years, and is widely utilized in grinding/polishing aeronautical superalloy components. Considering the decisive effect of surface integrity on components’ quality and performance, in–depth understanding of the surface integrity resulting from compliant grinding of the high-performance materials has great significance to the aerospace industry. The paper summarizes the manufacturing characteristics and system composition of robotic compliant grinding, especially the model and algorithm of intelligent control. It then reviews important evolution mechanism and theoretical modeling of surface integrity from three aspects including surface morphology, stress state and microstructure. Furthermore, the effects of surface integrity on fatigue strength and anti-corrosion performance of superalloy components are discussed. Finally, research directions of surface integrity in robotic compliant grinding of superalloys are presented.
