Abstract The development of thermal spraying nanostructured thermal barrier coatings is briefly reviewed. Several main challenges for thermal spraying nanostructured thermal barrier coatings in high temperature and long-term service performance are listed. The research status of these challenges in recent years is discussed. Finally, several research and development directions urgently awaiting attention and breakthroughs are pointed out.
