Abstract:The textile composite materials, as reinforced by fabrics with good integrity, overcome the shortcomings of traditional ones, such as low interlaminar shear strength, poor resistance to delamination, sensitive to cracking. Moreover, they have excellent near-net-forming ability and are easy to be molded. These advantages have led to the increasing use of these composite materials in aerospace, marine, automotive, medical devices, and other fields. Deformability of textile preform has important effects on its permeability and the mechanical properties of the final composite parts. The aim of this paper is to provide an review on the current state of the studies on the deformation of textile preforms. It starts by briefly introducing the structural characteristics of 2D and 3D fabrics, then the tensile, transverse compression, in-plane shear and out-of-plane bending deformation mechanisms of fabrics are elaborated. The research progress of deformation of textile preforms is summarized based on numerical simulation and experimental tests. Finally, the challenges and outlook of the numerical simulation on the deformation of preforms are outlined.
